Garfield Games: Why do you exist?

Thankfully, my parents have never "caught me in the act"...and why is he so happy about it?

How many of you as a kid were really into Garfield?  ok...How many of you were into Ninja Turtles, Pokemon, Batman, Power Rangers, Transformers, Disney Stuff, or even Barney?  That's what I thought.  Some characters manage to spawn a franchise title on just about every system, and the Garfield games that have come out over the years continue to baffle me.  Is there really a market for these games?  Do they really sell enough copies to warrant sequel after sequel on each generation of systems?  I know there's a niche market for certain games and characters, but I don't really see any hipsters telling me they were into Garfield before I was and I've probably never heard of him.  No, I've heard of him, and he's frankly, kind of stupid.

I've put alot of thought into the mindset of software distributors and why they release these types of games(yes, I'm really that bored).  There's loads of articles out there if you're really curious as to why companies continually release what's known in the industry as "shovelware" it's profitable, but most agree it hurts the console or platform in the long run.  I kinda think shovelware is neat to collect, as it's different, quirky, and responsible for my favorite game of all time...

Haters gonna hate

I don't always play DS, but when I do I ride HorseZZZZZZ ya'll.

  5. I actually don't really recall seeing a game about Garfield, but I feel like I have, and I agree, what's the point? What could the storyline possibly be?

  6. Garfield was a good comic strip but not as a movie or video game.

  7. Horsez is actually a version of Assassin's Creed where you play the horse instead of the assassin.

  8. ive never really been into garfield either

  9. Garfield has never been good. Not in any medium.

  10. The question is - who the heck thought that it was a good idea to make Garfiled movies?!

  12. My brother-in-law was forced to write a program for a Dressage (basically it's a competition centered around making horses "dance") game.

  13. Dude, I love reading Garfield comics, but a game...? And that Garfield movie that came out a while ago looked so lame.

  14. Because we want to be as lazy as garfield, I didn't expected to get any gameplay besides eating and sleeping.

  15. I've never even heard of this!

  16. Why do Garfield games exist? For the same reason that those 2 terrible movies came out, 20 years past Garfield's heyday: someone, somewhere will spend money on them. And I'll tell you what, it won't be me.

You hate Mondays, you like lasagna, and you're fat. I GET IT! Just retire already!

  17. Who would of thought the laziest cat could make such an action packed game.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh Garfield, why does a game for that cat exist?

  19. Garfield was the shit back in the day. Eating all that lasagna. I swear he sounded like one of the ghostbusters cartoon characters.

But as young as I was, I knew Garfield would never be a good game.

  20. didn't even know there was a game! OMG OMG OMG I HAVE to get it! eh... not really though!

  25. man I dont know about you guys but I played so many hours of garfield caught on the act on my sega genesis when i was 8. its one of the 5 games i had but i really liked it at the time.

  26. Ugh. These types of games I think draw in mothers to buy them for their kids for presents. Like movie games and the Wii. Great moneymakers, and they don't really harm the platform unless they hurt sales of decent games developers have invested a lot of time and money into.

  29. Garfield is a fat, oversold cat that should have died from obesity. What's not to love?

  30. The Chester Cheetos games weren't that bad.

  31. It is it just me, or is Garfield the worst comic ever?

  32. They made a Garfield game? I learn something new every day.

  34. Garfield should have never gone farther than the comic.

  35. Oh dear god, not horses. This is seriously why I don't understand the world sometimes.

  36. i have a garfield game. Its much more popular than you think. Maybe more popular with girls than boys though.

  38. This just proves that there was shovelware on all consoles, and it's not a relatively new concept. Back in the 16-bit era, there were tons of companies forming up two-bit concepts of independent licenses - look at Gex the Gecko or Bubsy the Cat. Or, in a lot of cases, they would just release a storm of corporate logo games (garfield or mickey mouse) and the company would still bomb out.

Pleased to meet you by the way. I love your blog. Follow me at http://guysimfreakingout.blogspot.com - I'm in the middle of a site move, but I'll have more content soon enough (I blog about nerd culture in general).

  39. Dude, don't diss HorseZZZ, that's my favorite game.

    ...next to Garfield, of course.

  40. I like the Garfield comics strip. Watched the cartoon as a kid. But I can't see how it would make even a halfway decent game...

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thats weird... seriously garfield... caught doing what? and its a kids game?... >:3

    ReplyDelete
  42. You know what, if it's a salable license and there are parents with small children, it will sell. I would say that Garfield is more of a title that presy on nostalgia than anything else.

At least no one has done a Calvin and Hobbes game (thank you Bill Watterson for having the chutzpah to not sell out!) I could see a revolt over that one.

    And who doesn't like Horsez? "I'm a pony!, I'm a pony! I'm a pony!"

  43. I used to like Garfield a lot when I was a kid. What was I thinking? I cringe about it now.

  44. Garfield is AWESOME. I don't know why all of you hate him so much. A friend of mine once said "The Absolutely Godliest God of Godliness a.k.a. Garfield" and I agree with him. Find me another comic character that's such realistic. Don't you find your own feats within Garfield?

Although I agree that there shouldn't be games about Garfield. Why? I don't know. I just think Garfield should stay a comic book character with no films, cartoons, games or anything else including him except for those brilliant comic books and strips.

  45. Garfield was a good comic... when I was eight.
